Music Magic for all

Schools

In our schools’ workshops, we present a large range of models from interactive assemblies/concerts, to full creative workshops built on composition and improvisation at all levels. Students do not need musical training, or to have played an instrument before. We work with nursery children right through to university postgraduate level. For tots we have themed events such as ‘Fun Fairs’ or ‘The Weather’ which include lots of singing and movement. For key stage 1 and 2 we link into current school projects and the curriculum. In secondary school we explore classical repertoire through improvising, composition and performance, particularly aiding GCSE composition. We are experienced in delivering educational and therapeutic music-making in special needs schools. We link the sessions with other school departments to help students access, for example literature or science through multi sensory methods. Music, gentle movement, smells and texture combine in these cross curricula sessions.

Family Events

Anything goes! From performing with electronics and sculpture, to The Guardian newspaper’s ‘ The Big Draw’, we love to work with artists, art galleries and museums. We devise workshops or concerts that reflect art through music, or use artists’ work to inspire students’ own work and then in turn link this to their own creative music making. In museums we use creative music drop-in sessions to help explore and access parts of the exhibition in greater depth. In theatre or during festivals, we present family concerts, introducing classical music in relevant ways to today’s audiences. At more intimate foyer workshops we involve everyone in playing, singing, dancing and composition, depending on the age of the group.

Elderly

There are three aspects to our work with the elderly: improvisation workshops with those living with dementia and their carers; one-to-one visits to residents that cannot leave their own rooms, where we play with or to them; and informal fun lounge concerts. The emphasis is on active listening, confidence building, and gentle movement.

Price £400 per day

Our fee includes all planning and preparation, materials and other expenses. We may need to add modest travel expenses.

KATHERINE AND JO formed Music Magic because they love playing music together, often spontaneous improvisation, and also love to enable others to feel confident to be creative and make music themselves. They are dedicated to the idea that music education is of great importance in all its forms. As well as encouraging working in teams, compromising and decision making, music making also enhances concentration and imagination. As needs be, they have many equally talented colleagues and enlarge their workforce for extended projects and more substantial concerts.
